Birthday Cake Suggestions & a Job Interview!

My 22nd birthday is August 8, and once again I'm going to make my own cake. I'm having a hard time choosing which kind though. I'm pretty sure I want to use a Dorie Greenspan recipe because I just got Baking From My Home to Yours, and I'm in love with it. I made her Perfect Party Cake for a Daring Bakers challenge a few months ago, and it was freakin awesome! So basically, the point of this post is to get suggestions for a good layer cake by Dorie (or any recipe you think will knock me off my feet). I'm down with anything... chocolate, vanilla, orange, pineapple, raspberry, coconut, caramel... seriously anything. However, I don't typically enjoy traditional American buttercream (butter, confectioners sugar, milk). So anything but that is perfectly acceptable.

ALSO! I have a job interview tomorrow at a bakery in Chesapeake called LaChoclatier Bakery. They specialize in custom cakes and wedding cakes, but they also do cheesecakes and other pastries (possibly cupcakes?). I applied for a retail sales position. I know retail. I OWN retail. ESPECIALLY when it comes to selling food. I've had to sell food for 13 hours straight, in a dust-covered field, in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. And I've done it all with a smile on my face. In addition, I like to believe that my newfound knowledge of baking is enough to get at least an entry level bakery job. Right? Ohh... wish me luck. I'm already nervous.
UPDATE: Guess who got the job? I go in for training Monday @ 7am! And because they saw my blog, they want me to work in the kitchen as well! This is such a dream come true. :) :) :)

I made my own birthday cupcakes too! I don't mind b/c then I get what I want ;). I've been wanting to try an orange and chocolate combo but for the Dorie cake maybe I'd go coconut and raspberry or strawberry? Thats what I did when I made it before and it was SO good! Good luck with your interview! I know you'll knock their pastry hats off :)

How about chocolate coconut and caramel all together? I'm hungry. Can you tell?

Good luck on your interview!

Glad you know we are both Leo's. My birthday is August 13th.

Ahhhhhh...you're a Leo. That's why we think alike. I was thinking of making the Perfect Party cake for my birthday. I am doing the recipe as is but using blueberry preserves instead of raspberry. I read somewhere the that Dorie's Chocolate Buttermilk cake is pretty yummy. Maybe that with like a caramel buttercream.

Good luck on the that interview!

I've always enjoyed strawberries (either in buttercream or fresh) and lemon curd together. It's my favorite combination. Happy Birthday and good luck on your interview!

Good luck with the job interview. I hope to someday work in a bakery (preferably my own!) when the boys are bigger. But until then I bake for those I love.
Happy Birthday - cake suggestion - German Chocolate - chocolate, caramel, and coconut together? YUM!
And this year I decided not to make my own cake and hubby didn't bother to get me one, so I was sadly cakeless! How depressing!

Make a cake. first make a layer of banana cake and top it with banana slices and banana pudding. then top that with a chocolate cake layer, strawberry slices, and chocolate pudding. Finally, top with a layer of vanilla cake. cover the whole cake in whipped cream frosting. The taste is AMAZING. happy 22nd birthday :]

Best of luck for your job interview - sounds to me like you are the *perfect* person for the position!

I don't have Dorie's book, so can't help you there, but I personally favour anything chocolate;) Seeing your creations whatever you choose will be amazing! Happy (nearly) birthday!

You are my hub's bday twin...it's his 40th this year though!! His party is this wkd, of course I am making his fave cupcakes.

I love Dorie's Perfect Party Cake even though it doesn't RISE enough for me (I just make it bigger so I get more layers)...did you see my Cupcake Hero?? Coconut cake, raspberry Chambord filling, and white chocolate coconut frosting? OMG it was DIVINE!!!! I made it in a layer cake...too bad it was gone too fast for us to get any pictures but it was one of my favorites. Happy early bday chickadee!!

AAAAAAAAH! Congratulations!!! You're perfect, I know that if I went there I'd let you upsell me to buying like $300 worth of stuff. I'm so happy for you, it sounds bitchin'!

As for the cake--follow your bliss! Based on your poll responses, I can't wait to see the cake--banana split!? Yes please. And happy birthday in advance. My own personal birthday is August too! (the website is today, mine is aug 26!).

Congrats on the job! And the birthday too.

I'm in love with chestnut cream right now! Some chestnut puree folded into stiff whipped cream and icing sugar would make for a light as air frosting.

Have fun!

Congratulations on the new job, and happy birthday!!! I love it when great things happen to great people :)

Since it's summertime, I would go for a lemon cake with lemony cream cheese frosting, with fresh raspberries in-between the layers and decorating the top. Or a berry shortcake. Or something chocolate :) Enjoy!

Congratulations! I sometimes miss working the retail side of baking. At least I miss working in a small cute bakery and getting to see the joy on kids faces when I hand them a sprinkled cover bit of joy.
