UPDATE: Thanks to your success stories, I tried it again with a few changes. I used self-rising flour and regular cocoa. I mixed it in a bowl first and poured it into the mug. I definitely recommend using the dark cocoa. Regular cocoa just doesn't have enough flavor. Also, unless you have a weak or old microwave, you don't need to cook it for 3 minutes. This time I only cooked mine for about 2 minutes. And let it cool! I know you want to eat it warm, but the texture changes drastically when it's cooled down! When it's hot, I gave it a 5 out of 10. When it cooled down I'd move that up to a 6.5 out of 10! Not much... but hey! It's a freakin microwaved cake! ;P
5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake (courtesy of The Internet by Al Gore... haha see what I did there?)
4 Tbsp flour
4 Tbsp sugar
2 Tbsp cocoa
1 egg
3 Tbsp milk
3 Tbsp oil
3 Tbsp chocolate chips (optional)
Splash of vanilla
1 large coffee mug (microwaveable)
Add dry ingredients to mug and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil. Mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract. Mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug. Don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little and tip out onto a plate, if desired.
Eat! (This can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous.)

You poor thing! You have been a victim of horrendous adventurous cooking! Eat something great to make up for it! Have a great night and a better tomorrow.
by the way, great Al Gore joke there....very funny.
Ok, so how cute are you? Too cute, watched the whole video and loved it - I am way to shy (as a litigator nonetheless) to do something like it. Thanks for the entertainment and saving us from that recipe.
That was quite possibly the best movie I've seen in while. I love your face when you're about to eat it. My mother has made this quite a few times and loves it. When she makes it, it rises out of the mug and then some and has a lighter and more cakey texture than yours did-I don't know what the difference is.
You should definitely do more videos!! That was hilarious, I couldn't stop laughing. I feel bad for those wasted Reese's chips, good thing you went easy on them..hehe. Thanks for trying this cake out for us!
That was absolutely hilarious!! More videos are a must!!
that is some crazy talk right there.
kidding. the microwave can be a great cooking ally! i learned how to make risotto in the microwave, so why not chocolate cake??
I was giggling all the while ....'couldn't she find a SHORTER mug?' lol. BUT you choose a redskins mug so it was all good! I have a few microwave cake recipes that have turned out. BTW....I totally copied your 'get to know you quiz'....I love your videos...!
GREAT video and post!!! I had a bad feeling about the outcome to the cake, but I applaud you for trying it!
I agree, stick to the easy bake oven, hehe ;)
Ok, I am back....I was reaily curious so I gave it a try....and it WORKED! So this is what I did differently.
1. Mixed it in a small bowl first as you suggested.
2. Added 1 extra Tbsp of cocoa, 1/2 tsp. baking powder and pinch salt.
3. Poured it in one of those 'bowl mugs' (the we typically use for soups and chili.) That sucker rose all the way to the top!
4. The chips do sink to the bottom but the good news is when I inverted it...I just smeared my knife around to make a 'kinda' frosting.
Very light and spongy....give it another try with the changes I did...See if you change your mind! Let me know if it worked for you...
I like that you showed us where you your keep flour.
CJ maybe you should stick with the oven instead of the microwave. =) I have a new recipe I want to try, and we still need to make that cheesecake! I think more "instructional" videos are in order, you are good at explaining things.
I've tried this recipe before, and while it's not stellar, it's a quick chocolate fix. Plus, topped with some vanilla ice cream, it totally rocks :)
I absolutely loved this. I was cracking up the whole time! You're totally brave. Never in my life would I find the courage to put myself on YouTube unshowered. And my mom totally has the same Tupperware containers! Only hers are school bus yellow. And they're older than me too.
I've also been there done that, with pretty similar results which I blogged about (check under 'microwave' if you want - lol it's the ONLY recipe in that label!). The creepiest thing I found was the appearance of the cake underneath, the finished texture was rubbery. It was fun to watch you make it, though I am sorry yours didn't seem to work out any better than mine.
I've heard mixed results with this recipe. Some say it's fabulous and others, like you, have a terrible experience. I've been wanting to try this out for a while now, but now I'm kinda scared.
great video! I made the 5min mug cake once before I went vegan and our results were actually pretty good. The cake was lovely and fluffy, but it overflowed the mug and seemed to explode over the inside of the microwave, so I think you were smart to use such a tall mug!!!
oops that was meant to be from my NZCQ blogger account!!
City x
Sorry to get pleasure out of your pain but that was kinda amusing.
hehe, your videos are cute and funny...you gotta find a way to keep the flour closer! hehe
After watching it all, I was so disappointed it didn't work out, cause I was thinking it was so amazingly easy!
at least i'm not the only whose having trouble finding the sonoma vanilla extract. i can't find it at our tj maxx, marshalls or ross out here in california. i ony have so much of my vanilla, but lots of my vanilla bean crush extract.
Ok, so I was as curious as a cat... and I was craving chocolate, so I gave this a go!
I used SR Flour instead and it worked perfectly! It was light and fluffy, I had it with a splash of custard over the top and it definitely satisfied my craving!
Hahahaha I loved the ending. with you tossing even the recipe in the bin. Though based on the comments, I feel like giving this a go.
And you should totally do more videos.
I've tried this before with results the same as yours. Very disgusting. Thanks for the video. Glad to know that it wasn't just me that had a horrible experience with the mug cake.
So funny that you shared this experience...I had the same one, but for some reason mine (while it looked gross) it didn't taste too bad.
http://lieslsconfectiondissection.blogspot.com/2008/10/what-cake-in-mug.html
Maybe we were desperatly craving something sweet though haha! I do have to admit though I will NEVER make it again, because if I really want something that bad and am going to waste the calories I am going to do it right! Nice video!
That video was hilarious! I loved that you used a redskins mug, by the way, I am a huge fan. Also, awesome that you still use your easy bake oven (something I never had as a kid). Keep up the good work!
I can't believe you made this again, you are so brave! I think after the first time, I probably would've quit. I guess the microwave just isn't for cakes or anything really except for reheating. I tried cooking an egg in it after watching some egg maker thing on an infomerical and it was the nastiest thing ever. I tried it again for broccoli when I was lazy and yea.. grossest broccoli ever.
I LOLed at your flour storage, so then my mom got interested and made me rewind the video. We enjoyed both of them. :)
Although I saw the recipe I haven t tried it perhaps cause I m not a fan of microwaved food. Prefer the old oven baked method. Thanks forn the revisted version. interesting :)
LOVED your videos! The first one might become an you tube hit, very very soon (you should thank Al Gore)! And the tupperware containers SO reminded me of home... I guess they last forever!
lol Just had to add.. In addition to the older-than-us-Tupperware, our moms both share the same taste in 1970s patterned Corelle dinner plates too.. Loving the videos!
hehe love that you tried it again, I did pretty much exactly what you did in terms of the mixing. Yeah its not the worlds best cake, but if I was in need of a quick fix, I'd do it again!
I tried making this awhile ago... twice, actually, and honestly, it's just terrible.
I realize that it's a 5 minute microwaved cake, but seriously - ew.
I can't believe your flour is all the way back there!!! That would kill me! Cool that you made a video. And props for posting a food-failure, I'm always reluctant to post those!
I love the second video...lol
Baking science can be so peculiar at times?! Perhaps it's the height of your mug or that it's glass and not ceramic? Sometimes we just don't have the luck....for example...I've been trying to make the perfect popover for YEARS....once, they popped out huge...and I've tried everything...the pan...warm ingredients....bah...popover don't like me....microwave doesn't like you....there you go....such as life....keep on baking girl...I love your posts!
I have had a microwave cake in a mug before and it was actually okay. But nothing beats a properly baked cake in the oven!
Loved your videos! Too funny. Don't think I'll be making the mug cake however:)
Oooh what a good idea! I love the idea of baking a cake in the microwave.
Great video! it looks very funny...i wanna try this recipe...right away i'm gonna get the ingredients from www.myethnicworld.com and try it.
I tried this quick cake and it was heaps of fun and actually tasted pretty good. I posted some details on my blog about it: http://simplerthanyouthink.blogspot.com/2009/06/5-min-chocolate-mud-cake-in-cup.html
**I figured out an amazing way to make this!!**
Ok, do as follows:
Mix 2 tbsp sugar, 4 tbsp flour, splash vanilla, 1 egg (I substituted with eggbeaters), 3 tbsp milk, 1/2 tbsp of oil, 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa in a bowl then pour into microwave-safe mug. Microwave 2 minutes. Then, poke hole in center, spoon 1 tbsp peanut butter into hole. Splash a little soymilk or milk onto cake if it's drier than you prefer. DELICIOUS! the peanut butter is gooey and the cake tastes and has the texture of real cake!! SO good, and less calories than original. All the oil is probably why yours got really spongy. Hope you guys like this :) I sure did... lol.
Oh I forgot one ingredient! --- 1 teaspoon of baking powder! Definitely an important one to remember.
