Wow! I got an overwhelming response for the Amish Friendship Bread starter! I feel bad that I was only able to share three. So I'm asking the girls that got mine if they'd like to pass along the extra starters that they'll end up with to some of the people who were interested in mine. Anyone who left me their e-mail address will be added to the list. I'll send the list to the original three, and they can contact you about getting a starter. It would be totally cool if everyone wrote their hometown on the original recipe I mailed. We can see just how much of America our starters can cover! :D Once again, for postage pricing reasons and because of the perishable nature of the starter, US residents only please.Last week, I was given a starter for Amish Friendship Bread. If you aren't familiar with Amish Friendship Bread, click here for some info. Essentially, it's the "chain letter" of the baking world. From what I gather, someone somewhere made abundant amounts of the starter and shared it with some of his/her friends. Then those friends "fed" it and shared some of it with their friends. And so on and so on... until a bag of it ended up in my hands! Now it's my turn to feed it and pass it on to three of my friends. That's where my dilemma lies. I don't know three people who bake! The ones who DO bake already got a starter from the same person who gave me mine. So I'm offering them up to three of my readers. According to the recipe, the starter does not need to be refrigerated and needs to be fed every five days. If I mail it the same day I feed it, it should be okay in the mail for the next four days. It does need to be "mashed" every day, but I have a feeling the US Postal Service will take care of that, if you know what I mean! If you're interested in continuing the cycle, you can contact me via e-mail or leave your e-mail address in a comment. Please don't leave your mailing address in a comment. We can exchange mailing information via e-mail, and I'll send you a starter. My starter will be ready to bake tomorrow (Monday), so if I get your mailing address before 5pm (Monday) I'll try to send it immediately!
Because of the perishable nature of the starter, U.S. residents only please!

Ooh, that bread is so fun and delicious! I don't bake, but I remember my high school math teacher called the starter her "bag of mush."

Hahahahaha, suckers! LOL I've done that bread twice in my lifetime. Once from ignorance of the commitment....second because I remember the fun creativity I had and wanted to try new flavors again...BUT like child birth...I had forgotten about the pain....LOL
Have fun people...start making your list of friends and family who want bread!!!
How sad Australia is so far away! This sort of sounds like what Jamie Oliver was trying to achieve in the poor parts of England, getting people to teach each other recipes. Its a lovely idea!
I would love to try it!!

Thank you!
I was given some of this too, but this is the secret I learned. Once I gave it everyone and had one left I got of "feeding" it and baked all of the loaves and froze them. That took too much time though, so then I kept a bag and took care of it until the final day then I divided it up. I got a few bags of 1 cup portions, in case I wanted to start the process again and I have 3 bags with 2 cup portions so I can take it out, defrost and bake!! Anyway, just a suggestion for the next time you don't have anyone to share it with.
hooray!

Looks like you have plenty of takers, I am still laughing about the US Postal service "helping" with the recipe! Hope you post the recipe and results. I used to love the Amish breads my friends and I used to do. But for some reason (probably a baby) we quit and when we started back up the recipe had a pudding mix in it. I would love to find the old one again.
Good luck with the mailing. Hope homeland security doesn't get worried!
I LOVE Amish Friendship bread--it is honestly one of the tastiest treats I've ever had. I started the "starter" once in college, but unfortunately, I didn't have many people to pass it, too. I would love to get this culinary chain letter. I promise that if I can't pass mine on, I'll continue to just make batches for myself!!
I've made this several times. It's really goooood!

I just made amish bread last week. I store my starters in the freezer. They freeze really well!
How funny, we had this bread last night at a friend's house! It is soooo good!
I just went through this whole process because I just couldn't say no to a neighbor. Because I recently moved - I literally have "no friends" so after I made the bread - I completely broke the chain and tossed the starter. Didn't think to send it 3,000 miles to my "old" friends (who would have killed me).
I WILL ALSO LIKE TO TRY IT . MY EMAIL is Lulyclemen@hotmail.com
If anyone has the starter in Phoenix, I'd love to be in your friendship chain!
Thanks!
