The Gourmet Baking Co.® Dark Chocolate Cupcake Mix

I bought this Gourmet Baking Co. brand cupcake mix from TJ Maxx a few months ago. Recently I found 2 other flavors of the same brand... but more about those in a future post. The mix costs $6.99 and comes with 3 pouches: cake mix, buttercream mix, and sprinkles (which were totally ugly, btw!). The method of mixing the batter is much like that of all the other "gourmet" cupcake mixes that are out there. Personally, I don't think the method has anything to do with the way the cupcake turns out. I think they just want to be different from Mrs. Crocker, Mr. Hines, and Sir "Doughboy". The end result was an "off" chocolate flavored, slightly dry cupcake, and the most disgusting packaged frosting I've ever tasted. Even adding extra butter to it couldn't help. Not to mention it barely made enough to frost TWO cupcakes!! What a sham. I only frosted one cupcake with the provided frosting (for rating purposes). I topped the rest with vanilla SMBC. As usual I recommend Betty Crocker over this "gourmet" mix, hands down.

PS: My mom's 15+ yr old KA mixer that I've been using for the past year is slowly making it's way to mixer heaven. So, I ordered this beauty from Everythingkitchens.com yesterday! It's a KitchenAid Artisan tilt-head stand mixer with a 5 qt. bowl. And it's tangerine orange to match my future 60s/70s themed kitchen! It was only $249.99. And it came with a mail-in rebate to get a $40 prepaid Visa card. What a deal!!
UPDATE: My beauty arrived in the mail! It's so freakin awesome! I can't wait to whip up some super delicious SMBC with this baby!!

Ingredients Cupcake mix, buttercream mix, and Easter egg-shaped sprinkles...
At least it made more than 12...
Cooling
That's all the buttercream mix made!
The finished product... at least it looked pretty!

Overall rating on a scale of 1-5
Moistness: 4
Tenderness: 4
Frosting: 1

OMG, I can't believe that's all the frosting that they provided. Can you imagine 6.99; that's about twice what they'd cost to make with Dutch cocoa, even a good brand. I'm so envious of your new Kitchen Aid. I have the plain old white one, but they're all workhorses.

I love my kitchen aid. I didn't a cute orange one like you. I totaly would have fit perfectly in my kitchen. Since my kitchen is orange. Even a green one would have worked, but when I got mine they just had white and black, so I opted for the white. Pampered chef is fun you should try hosting a class. They have fun bake ware I'm sure you'd like. :) Happy baking!

You will LOVE your mixer. I have the same one, in pink (of course lol), and let me tell you its hard for me to NOT use it! I have to remind myself there are some things that are better off being mixed by hand. But damn is it a beautiful mixer.

Good luck with it!

I want that mixer! 250 is a little less than 900 Malaysian ringgit. I'd pay that gladly, but in Malaysia a basic KA will set me back 2600 ringgit.

Nice color! I have a cobalt blue KA & added flames to it like Alton Brown from Good Eats. If you like to see a picture, shoot me an email.
