Sprinkles® Vanilla Cupcake Mix

Don't get caught in the hype and waste your money. These cupcakes aren't very delicious, and the mix takes all the fun out of making them yourself. The thing I said about the Sprinkles Red Velvet mix goes for this Vanilla mix too; Betty Crocker cake mix tastes 1 million times better and costs less than $2/box (Betty Crocker makes 24 cupcakes, and Sprinkles at $14/box only makes 12-16). So anyway, that's my review. Here are the photos. Oh yeah I topped these babies with Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting to cover up the flavor of the not-so-yummy cupcakes.
EDIT: After actually eating one of these and not just nibbling on crumbs, I change my opinion from "not very delicious" to barely edible. Sick. Really, please don't waste your money! For some reason my mom's co-workers liked them. I have a feeling they were just being nice.

Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting
Makes enough to frost 24 cupcakes

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
3 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted
2 tablespoons heavy cream

1. Cream together the butter and cream cheese.
2. Slowly add sifted confectioners' sugar and salt and mix until smooth.
3. Add melted chocolate and vanilla and mix until combined.
4. Add heavy cream and mix on medium-high for 30 seconds.

Overall rating on a scale of 1-5
Moistness: 2
Tenderness: 2
Frosting: 4

Thanks for trying out the mix for all of us. They do look beautiful though, and that frosting sounds incredible!

You can add the chocolate mint ones to the list of nasty Sprinkles cupcake mixes

Thanks for the review - I'm sure the "Sprinkles" people won't be too thrilled but hey...going to the bulk food place and getting them for a fraction of the cost and topping them on a Betty Crocker mix works just fine. $1.99 for the cake mix - $1.25 for the sprinkles works out to $0.27/cupcake for a batch of 12. Does that sound really anal?

thanks for the heads up. how silly. $14/box and barely edible. maybe just lick the frosting off the rest of them?

Have you ever tried the "fresh" ones from Sprinkles's bakery? Do these taste the same or different from those?

Anonymous, I haven't tried cupcakes from the Sprinkles bakery. There aren't any near Virginia!

I made your rocky road cupcakes. Cant wait to try them tomorrow. Thanks. Kelli

although I'm a huge fan of Sprinkles Vanilla Cupcakes, even I wouldn't waste $14 on any of their cake mixes. Their are plenty of vanilla cupcake recipes out there.

Below is a Sprinkles cupcake recipe. Simply add a tad more vanilla and it should be fine.

Try it and let me know what you think.

SPRINKLES CUPCAKES RECIPE

Ingredients
Makes 1 dozen

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
1/4 cup whole milk, room temperature
1 ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 large egg, room temperature
2 large egg whites, room temperature

Butter Cream Icing

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, firm and slightly cold
Pinch of coarse salt
3 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

I don't know about that! I tried the cupcake mixes and they turned out divine for me. Even if the frosting was a tad too sweet, but it was still really good.

Jacob, it must come down to a matter of opinion. I've heard a lot of negative reviews of these cupcake mixes and not so many praises. I'm glad they were good for you though! :D

I love this website
I was wondering, can you replace confectioner's sugar with brown sugar?
Hope that's not a stupid question

How To Eat A Cupcake said...

Himani, confectioners' sugar is a very fine powder. Brown sugar wouldn't dissolve or thicken the frosting.

I tried out this recipe and served it to my English class for extra credit, and
they absolutely loved it.
And I used confectioner's sugar (:

Thank you for this blog!

Real Sprinkles Cupcakes from the bakery are divine, in my opinion. I don't find the frosting to be too sweet but I have heard that criticism. I've tried cupcakes from many of the various cupcakeries around Los Angeles, and Sprinkles are quite good.

you have no idea what you're talking about. you can't try ONE recipe from sprinkles and automaticlly assume that none of them are good. and you stupid bloggers. you can't just take someone's word for it. i have tried almost all sprinkles recipes because i live down the street from the store in LA. they are the best. i won't eatany other cupcake.

Anonymous, thanks for your opinion. I didn't use a Sprinkles recipe. I used their packaged cupcake mix. Also, thanks for generalizing "you stupid bloggers" for me. I love being categorized by people who don't know me! ;)

Cool blog! I've had the (lucky) chance to have a real Sprinkles cupcake and cupcakes from the mix... I will say I am very partial to certain flavors, even the real deal ones from the bakery. There are some differences between the real cupcakes (the vanilla is absolutely the most incredible vanilla cupcake I've ever had) and the mix. I've used the lemon and spice cupcake mixes. The lemon cupcake mix is better than the real lemon cupcake in my opinion. The frosting recipe that comes with the cupcake mix ices many more than the 12 cupcakes it makes. I know some people who don't care much for either Sprinkles cupcake, whether it's the real deal or from the mix. I will say that 14$ is a hefty price to pay for 12 cupcakes, although half the price of what you would pay for a dozen cupcakes at the bakery itself. You get the name and packaging either way, but I am a huge fan of Sprinkles either way.
I'll definitely try out the recipe posted earlier though... I'm actually on the hunt for the vanilla frosting recipe as I type. :)

Sprinkles vanilla cupcakes rock. I would never buy the premade cake mixes from Sprinkes, but I would never use a box from Betty Crocker or Pilsbury either. I prefer my own cupcakes from scratch.
